Poppy Skipper

Poppy’s artistic practice combines minimalism, abstraction, and constructivism, focusing on the arrangement of shape and colour across various mediums, including painting, drawing, found materials, and installation. Her work explores the relationship between form and space, often using a Gestalt approach that considers how shapes and colours interact with one another to influence the viewer’s perception.

A key aspect of her practice is her use of primary colours, and the ephemeral nature of certain works, especially her wall paintings. She is often surprised by the temporary aspect of these pieces, allowing her to engage with the idea of an extended canvas, knowing that the work won’t last forever. This fleeting quality challenges her approach to the creative process. Her practice also thrives on the manipulation of space, relying on intuition when placing materials or works within a given environment, sometimes altering the architecture itself to shift the viewer’s experience. Poppy further explores the concept of form and language by rearranging letters to create non-existent words. These fabricated words appear coherent at first glance but hold no true meaning. Written phonetically, they reflect her interest in structural forms and intuitive creation, free from any preconceived notions or biases.
