Naimo Omar

𐒁𐒘𐒈𐒑𐒘𐒐𐒐𐒖𐒔 | ﷽ | Bismillah
I remake, make, compose and recompose sound, video, text and sculpture, in reference to transnational conceptions of Somali identity (Somaalinimo/Somali-ness); currently, an excavation of the Cusmaanya/Osmanya script, a decommissioned Somali alphabet with a 50-year lifespan. The silence of Black life in the archives, and the enmeshment of coloniality in these silences, is resounding. In its lexis, I track a pattern of obsolescence and inertia, whether in chalky museological storerooms or through the disappearance of an alphabet stumbled upon in online forums, a steady re-emergence. Ultimately, it is a hollowing act of my enfleshed diasporic subjectivity, this practice, a sifting and sifting of form.
