Mark Friedlander
Mark Friedlander’s research—which comprises the production of exhibitions, performances and accompanying analysis—considers how risk and associated bureaucratic procedures shape the production and reception of artworks. He finds the entangled relationship between the roles of artist, arts professionals and related administrative functions associated with risk management are often pivotal in shaping aesthetic outcomes. In particular, bureaucratic and pragmatic procedures often play an underestimated role in the formation of artworks. In applying practical understandings as both an artist and institutional professional, the research reveals the complex interdependence between a work of art and the risk management procedures that mediate it.
