Through my creative practice I explore themes of nostalgia and the domestic. My work utilises a mixed media approach, often soft, textile sculpture with elements of movement and participation. I’ve been exploring how the decorative and/or ornamental elements of western culture can juxtapose the lived experience of events. A considerable proportion of my inspiration is drawn from childhood experiences, including recollections of significant events, familiar cultural iconography, and the gentle absurdities that ritualise the domestic contexts of growing up in Australian suburbia. I’ve approached these moments and memories through the lens of literature, fairy tales, and popular cultural elements. Drawing awareness to personal and shared experiences and memories; and how these can sit in delicate company.
My work asks the viewer to question their own memories, relationships to culture and the whimsy within their own lived experience.
