The gym evokes fear: a space presumably organised by gym bros, hustle culture, sterile lighting, cold machines, mould, skid marks, self-discipline and sweaty towels. In a bid for self-transformation I have “turned towards” this place, adopting a regimented methodology to - well everything. The gym is all of these things, and yet it's also a site full of possibility. Fantasy. Aspiration. Sexual tension.
With reference to contemporary Affect Theory, Phenomenology and Marxism, my work explores the mutually constitutive relationship between the self-regulatory spaces we inhabit, the objects we build to build ourselves, and the function of our bodies. I am interested in the potentiality of discipline in a world determined by the desire for more.
