I always find myself returning to collage as a source material for my paintings. There is something exhilarating about taking images out of their original context and reassembling them to create a unique composition. I often work without a specific narrative in mind. This intuitive process results in artworks that look absurd and sit between figuration and abstraction. This year I have taken an interest in making art about boxing, because this sport embodies the psychological and visual intensity that I seek to articulate in my paintings. Working from collages of boxing images gives me the freedom to capture the boxers’ trance-like state and draw the audience into the fight.
