Alexi Cordes
In an ongoing act of painting as witnessing, I wrestle with the concepts of coincidence, shared space and private timelines.
Cross-hatching the linear grains of a manufactured wooden surface, I am interested in the possibility of exposing cyclical and collectivised time.
From these exposures, I build and destroy bridges between ordinary events - each parallel line a recording of my own decisions, fears and desires that together resemble environments from traumas watched and lived.
Across a suite of related works, boats, water, fire, and naked women appear as both narratively charged personal motifs as well as languages that have been upheld throughout the Western traditions of painting and aesthetic representation.
